About the role#
GM Performance Power Units is hiring an Electrothermal Modeling Engineer Intern for the Summer 2027 term. You will join the Energy Store team in Concord, North Carolina, to develop a coupled thermal-ECM cell model in Star-CCM+. This work allows our thermal design team to iterate on cell candidates within the existing CFD workflow. You will work directly with cell test technicians and Energy Store engineers to build, tune, and validate these models.
What you'll do#
- Integrate battery cell electrical and thermal Reduced Order Models into the Star-CCM+ Battery module.
- Configure and tune coupled thermal-electrical simulations, including mesh independence, boundary conditions, and solver convergence.
- Extract Equivalent Circuit Model parameters from battery cycler data.
- Correlate simulated cell voltage and surface temperature against measured drive-profile data.
- Conduct sensitivity studies on primary model parameters.
- Author a repeatable model-calibration standard operating procedure validated by an independent engineer.
- Present your progress and validation results during mid-program and final reviews.
- Archive all raw data, processed models, and documentation.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a BSc, MSc, MEng, or PhD program in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, chemistry, or chemical engineering.
- Anticipated graduation date between December 2027 and May 2028.
- Fluent in Python, specifically NumPy, SciPy, pandas, and Matplotlib.
- Strong understanding of equivalent-circuit modeling and CFD fundamentals for conjugate-heat-transfer problems.
- Strong communication skills.
- Willingness to complete on-site high-voltage and cell-lab safety training.
- Prior experience with Star-CCM+, MATLAB, Simulink, or FSAE/Formula Student EV teams is preferred.
- Knowledge of Li-ion cell electrochemistry, ISO 6469, or IEC 62660 test methodologies is a plus.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid, on-site internship located in Concord, NC.
- You must be able to work on-site for the duration of the internship.
- Ability to work in variable environments, including race shops and commercial facilities, is required.
