    About the role#

    The CMOS BEOL Reliability Engineering Intern will work with the Fab 8 Reliability Engineering team in Malta, New York. You will help develop and implement an inline methodology to assess risks for critical back-end-of-line (BEOL) defects in automotive products. This role involves connecting manufacturing defect data with reliability physics to create actionable monitoring insights and risk metrics.

    What you'll do#

    • Learn the fundamentals of BEOL reliability, failure mechanisms, inline monitoring, and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
    • Analyze inline defect data and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images to identify manufacturing defects.
    • Connect defect types with BEOL degradation mechanisms such as electromigration and time-dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB).
    • Perform statistical analysis to understand key risk drivers.
    • Build data-analysis and visualization tools or dashboards to track defect trends.
    • Support the development of monitoring methodologies for automotive products.
    • Collaborate with Reliability, Contamination-Free Manufacturing, and Process Integration teams.
    • Document methods and results, and present your findings in a final technical presentation.
    • Maintain a safe and responsible work environment.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment as at least a sophomore in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD program for Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Semiconductor Engineering, or a related field.
    • A minimum 3.0 GPA and good academic standing.
    • Fluency in written and spoken English.
    • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week.
    • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
    • Experience or coursework in semiconductor devices, materials, manufacturing, reliability, statistics, or data analytics.
    • Familiarity with BEOL interconnects, copper metallization, dielectric materials, and defect mechanisms.
    • Proficiency in tools such as Python, JMP, Minitab, Excel, Power BI, or MATLAB.
    • Ability to work independently and within a cross-functional team.
