About the role#
This is a fundamental research position focused on catching browser-based bots that currently evade existing detection signals. You will not be performing general software engineering. Instead, you will work to identify how automated scripts bypass browser-level defenses and invent new signals to stop them. The goal is to produce original research and validate your findings against real customer data. If your signals prove effective, they will be integrated into the BrowserGuard product by our engineering team.
What you'll do#
- Study how browser-based bots evade detection by working closely with Chromium and JavaScript internals.
- Form and test original hypotheses to produce net-new detection signals.
- Validate your ideas against real customer data to ensure they catch bots without flagging real users.
- Hand off your best signals to the engineering team for implementation.
- Engage in high-value projects outside the immediate scope of the role.
What you'll need#
- Master's or PhD-level computer science student, recent graduate, or equivalent depth.
- Proven research instincts and experience working on problems where the answer was not known in advance.
- Deep understanding of browser internals and knowledge of JavaScript from the inside.
- Ability to learn Chromium internals and internet protocols.
- Independent and curious mindset.
- Bonus points for contributions to the Chromium project, open-source browser or security work, or prior research in bot detection, anti-fraud, anti-spoofing, or adversarial ML.
- Bonus points for published or presented original technical research.
Location & details#
- Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
- Work Modality: On-site or Hybrid.
- Term: Winter 2027.
- Status: Full-time.
