About the role#
As a Hardware R&D Engineering Intern, you will join the Platform Technology team to research and develop next generation 3D printers. You will work in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside mechanical, systems, and software engineers. This role focuses on the printing process, using physics and experimentation to refine how our machines create parts.
What you'll do#
- Design, build, and innovate new 3D printing techniques, ranging from new printer architectures to galvo control.
- Evaluate current printer performance to identify areas for improvement.
- Design and execute experiments, then use the results to inform software or hardware updates.
- Redesign support structure algorithms based on your experimental findings.
- Collaborate with other engineering teams to implement improvements to existing products.
- Tackle complex, open-ended problems that span multiple engineering disciplines.
What you'll need#
- A portfolio of your previous engineering work or projects.
- Experience with experiment design and data analysis.
- Familiarity with mechanical design, mechatronics, CAD modeling, and hands-on prototyping.
- Understanding of programming and scientific computing.
- Ability to work autonomously to research new concepts.
- A willingness to question assumptions and support your ideas with data.
- Previous experience working on a consumer product.
- Experience developing physics-based models of complex systems.
- Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
Location & details#
- Location: Somerville, Massachusetts (On-site).
- Term: Winter 2027 (January through April).
- Commitment: Full-time.
- Compensation: $1,575 to $1,950 per week, paid bi-weekly.
