About the role#
This summer internship offers a technical project focused on the intersection of field instrumentation, embedded systems, industrial networking, and cybersecurity. You will own a project for the 12-week duration, working alongside teams to improve the architecture and reliability of temporary data acquisition systems. The role involves a mix of office and lab work, as well as hands-on field assignments at geothermal sites. At the end of the summer, you will present your results to department leads and executive leadership.
What you'll do#
- Develop, prototype, and test Industrial IoT and edge computing solutions.
- Design and improve telemetry workflows that connect field sensors, edge devices, and centralized data systems.
- Collaborate with Data Acquisition, IT, and OT teams to enhance network connectivity and cybersecurity.
- Perform pressure, temperature, flow, and meteorological measurements.
- Assist with the deployment, commissioning, and troubleshooting of remote seismic stations and field instrumentation.
- Evaluate system reliability and data quality.
- Document hardware configurations, network architectures, and test results.
What you'll need#
- Current status as a rising Junior, Senior, Master's student finishing within the next year, or PhD candidate.
- Hands-on experience with embedded platforms like Raspberry Pi or Arduino, electronics, or hardware prototyping.
- A basic understanding of computer networking, including TCP/IP, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and routing.
- Ability and willingness to participate in field assignments at geothermal sites.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Eagerness to learn and take initiative.
- Preferred experience includes Python, Linux, Git, scripting, and industrial protocols like Modbus, MQTT, or OPC UA.
- Familiarity with industrial routers, cellular modems, VPNs, firewalls, and VLANs is a plus.
- Coursework or projects related to network security, OT/ICS systems, or industrial cybersecurity frameworks are beneficial.
- Experience with DAQ systems, PLCs, SCADA, or time-series sensor data is helpful.
