    About the role#

    This summer internship offers law students the chance to experience legal practice within a business-focused, in-house environment. You will work alongside experienced counsel on matters supporting Canadian agriculture and food businesses. The role provides exposure to commercial lending, contracts, corporate governance, employment law, litigation, procurement, intellectual property, and privacy. You will gain insight into how an in-house legal team manages risk and supports organizational goals.

    What you'll do#

    • Conduct legal research and analysis on a broad range of issues.
    • Prepare legal memoranda, briefing notes, summaries, and presentations for internal stakeholders.
    • Support in-house counsel on commercial lending, financing, corporate transactions, and governance initiatives.
    • Assist with drafting, reviewing, and revising legal agreements, policies, and business documents.
    • Support the management of litigation and employment-related matters, including document review and fact gathering.
    • Contribute to the development of lending documentation and internal guidance.
    • Participate in strategic projects, including new products and process improvement efforts.
    • Attend meetings with lawyers, business teams, and external counsel.
    • Support Corporate Secretary activities and governance processes.
    • Collaborate with legal professionals across multiple practice areas.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in a Juris Doctor (JD), Bachelor of Laws (LLB), or equivalent law degree program at an accredited school.
    • A strong interest in developing an understanding of in-house legal practice.
    • Excellent research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
    • Sound judgment and the ability to develop practical recommendations.
    • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
    • Coursework or experience in corporate law, commercial law, employment law, civil litigation, contract law, banking, finance, or governance is an asset.
    • Experience conducting legal research through academic, co-op, volunteer, or professional work.
    • Knowledge of financial services, commercial lending, or regulated industries.
    • Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset.
