About the role#
ESTAT Actuation is a startup based on research from Carnegie Mellon. We develop electroadhesive components like clutches, brakes, and latches for robotics. We are currently scaling our operations and moving from research to large-volume sales with international corporations. This co-op role is a chance to contribute directly to the development of our core technology.
What you'll do#
As a Materials Engineer, you will focus on the development of electroadhesive materials. Your work will include producing dielectric inks, defining processes for printed circuitry, and selecting substrate materials. You will also design custom products, translate designs into production files, and manage supplier orders while overseeing quality control.
Your day-to-day tasks will vary. You might machine parts in our shop, perform statistical analysis, or program a robotic test stand. We will also ask you to draft CAD models, perform FEA, and conduct test-to-failure experiments. You may travel to visit a supplier factory or attend an Air Force Base for acceleration sled testing. You will also assist with patent drafting and represent the company at major conferences.
What you'll need#
We prefer students in their Junior or Senior year, though we will consider lower classmen who have exceptional hands-on experience. You should have a solid mastery of the basics in your field of study. We value self-motivated team players who pay attention to details. Most importantly, you should be able to share stories of trial and error with humility and a positive attitude.
