About the role#
DOWL is seeking an intern for the Summer 2027 term to join our water and wastewater team in Billings. This position provides engineering assistance across a range of projects while offering mentorship to help you grow your skills in water resources engineering. You will work alongside professionals experienced in hydrology, hydraulics, and hydraulic structures.
What you'll do#
- Assist with field investigations, technical report writing, project design, and construction inspection.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses using software such as HY-8, HEC-RAS, and HEC-HMS.
- Use GIS applications to determine watershed characteristics and create map exhibits.
- Support various engineering groups including geotechnical, transportation, and structural teams.
- Prepare plans and design packages for project delivery.
- Perform engineering calculations to support design work.
- Tabulate bid items and calculate construction quantities to estimate project costs.
- Provide construction administration support and perform field work as needed.
What you'll need#
- Completion of one to two years of college-level coursework toward a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering.
- A strong interest in water resources engineering.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to interpret technical instructions, analyze scientific journals, and draw valid conclusions from data.
- Mathematical skills including geometry, trigonometry, probability, and statistical analysis.
- A valid driver's license.
- Experience with ARC GIS and AutoCAD Civil 3D is highly desirable.
- Previous work experience in construction or civil engineering fields is a plus.
