About the role#
DOWL is seeking a Transportation Design Intern for the summer of 2027. This internship provides hands-on experience and one-on-one mentorship within our civil engineering team. You will work on various design projects and gain exposure to field investigations, construction administration, and inspection services.
What you'll do#
- Assist with field investigations, project design, and construction inspection.
- Perform engineering calculations to support design projects.
- Tabulate bid items and calculate construction bid quantities from plans and specifications.
- Estimate construction costs.
- Provide AutoCAD drafting support.
- Prepare and route project correspondence and maintain records.
- Assist with writing and editing construction specifications and technical reports.
- Perform other engineering duties as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Completion of 1-2 years of college-level coursework toward a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering.
- A valid driver's license.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to read and interpret technical journals and instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
- Capability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to present information effectively to clients and co-workers.
- Mathematical skills including probability, statistical analysis, geometry, trigonometry, and proportions.
- Prior work experience in construction or civil engineering is preferred.
- Knowledge of ARC GIS and AutoCAD Civil 3D is highly desirable.

- This position is based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
- The role is on-site and full-time.
- This is a paid internship.
