About the role#
Corning is hiring a graduate-level intern for Summer 2027 to work on computational materials modeling. You will work at the intersection of simulation and experimental science. Projects include machine-learned force field development for thin films, mesoscale modeling of glass-ceramic etching, and multiphysics modeling of laser damage in optical coatings. You will select a project that matches your background, develop and validate your models, and present your findings at the end of the term.
What you'll do#
- Select a project aligned with your background and review relevant literature.
- Develop a focused modeling plan with clear validation criteria.
- Set up, run, and analyze simulations using methods such as MLFF training, molecular dynamics, density functional theory, or COMSOL Multiphysics.
- Build reproducible scripts and workflows for construction, parameter studies, data analysis, and visualization.
- Compare model predictions against experimental observations or higher-fidelity calculations.
- Quantify uncertainty and sensitivity to key parameters.
- Deliver a documented model, a technical summary, and a final presentation.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited Master's or doctoral program in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science, or a related field.
- Completed foundational coursework in materials science and at least one relevant area like numerical methods, thermodynamics, kinetics, heat transfer, quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, or machine learning.
- Proficiency in Python or another scientific programming language.
- Familiarity with generative AI tools and agentic workflow frameworks.
- Experience in a Linux or high-performance computing environment.
- Prior research or project experience using computational methods.
- Preferred: Experience with atomistic simulation packages, training machine-learning models, COMSOL Multiphysics, finite-element methods, or version control.
- Preferred: Familiarity with thin films, optical coatings, glass, etching, defects, or laser-material interactions.
Location & details#
- Location: Corning, New York.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- This is a full-time, paid internship.
- Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.
