About the role#
The City of Ottawa is hiring one co-op student for the Traffic Engineering Unit. This position supports the design, operation, and maintenance of over 1,200 signalized intersections. You will gain hands-on experience with traffic control signal systems, data analysis, and planning while working on various municipal projects.
What you'll do#
- Perform field studies including queuing, delay, travel time, and volume counts.
- Evaluate traffic signal timing, phasing, and incident management.
- Investigate traffic signal complaints and provide recommendations for resolution.
- Analyze traffic data using Synchro and other software tools.
- Prepare written reports that summarize field data and project recommendations.
- Manage signal timing databases from the central traffic control system.
- Assist in preparing and evaluating data for local traffic signal controllers.
- Conduct capacity analysis to assess the impact of changes to the road network.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a 3rd or 4th year co-op program at a Canadian post-secondary institution in Civil, Transportation, or Computer studies.
- Proficiency in MS Office, specifically Word and Excel.
- Strong analytical, research, and detail-oriented skills.
- A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points.
- Ability to use your own transportation for work purposes.
- Previous work experience in Civil or Transportation Engineering is an asset.
- Proof of co-op program enrollment is required for your application.

- Location: 175 Loretta Street, Ottawa, Ontario.
- Term: Winter 2027 (January to April).
- Modality: On-site.
- Hours: 35 hours per week.
- Language: English (oral, reading, and writing).
