About the role#
The City of St. Thomas is hiring a Building Co-op Student for an 8-month term from January 2027 to August 2027. This on-site, full-time position supports the Planning and Building Services department. You will assist with the administration and enforcement of provincial statutes, the Building Code, and the Fire Code.
What you'll do#
- Conduct site inspections for residential construction to ensure work matches approved drawings and regulations.
- Review permit applications and perform plan examinations.
- Consult with the public and permit applicants about Building Code requirements.
- Respond to property complaints and inspect sites for compliance.
- Inform Building Inspectors of discrepancies and the need for formal orders.
- Perform and record calculations for permit reviews and verify approvals from Ontario government ministries.
- Issue verbal and written approvals for construction stages.
- Maintain accurate records and databases for investigations and enforcement activities.
- Prepare reports for the Chief Building Official.
- Attend relevant seminars and training sessions.
- Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a co-op program for Building Science, Engineering, Architecture, or Construction.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and strong record management skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational, time management, and research skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to issue clear written instructions and provide effective customer service, even when dealing with difficult situations.
- Physical ability to climb ladders, walk over rough terrain, and enter confined spaces.
- Possession of, or ability to acquire, valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Related experience is considered an asset.
