    About the role#

    The Right Whale Ecology Program (RWEP) monitors the abundance, distribution, and behavior of North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay and nearby waters. As a photo-ID intern, you will serve as the primary vessel photographer and observer. You will work on research cruises and manage the resulting data in the office. This is a full-time, paid position based in Provincetown, Massachusetts, running from January 4, 2027, to May 28, 2027.

    What you'll do#

    • Photograph critically endangered North Atlantic right whales during research cruises.
    • Collect behavioral, environmental, and sightings data on whales, other marine species, and fishing gear.
    • Download and process vessel photos, matching individual whales to known animals in catalogs.
    • Enter and maintain data in project databases.
    • Process sightings data from external platforms.
    • Maintain vessel field equipment.
    • Assist with habitat tasks, including the collection and processing of zooplankton samples.

    What you'll need#

    • An undergraduate degree in progress or completed, ideally in biological or environmental sciences.
    • Experience with marine mammal surveys, specifically identifying large cetaceans and photo-identification.
    • Proficiency with digital SLR cameras, lenses, and filters.
    • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Windows.
    • Experience working on boats and the physical stamina to withstand harsh conditions for up to 10 hours.
    • The ability to work well in a small team and maintain a high level of attention to detail.
    • A valid US driver's license is preferred, as is experience with iMatch software, GPS equipment, and database management.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Provincetown, Massachusetts.
    • Term: January 4, 2027, through May 28, 2027.
    • Compensation: $15 per hour with housing provided.
    • Schedule: Average of 40 hours per week, including weekends, holidays, and evenings as required by weather and fieldwork.
