Caterpillar’s Corporate Engineering Intern program provides students with the opportunity to work alongside engineering professionals on meaningful project work. Interns gain hands-on experience, participate in professional networking, and develop technical and business skills through team collaboration and performance evaluations. This is a 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) assignment.
What you'll do#
Interns join teams with diverse project responsibilities and may focus on the following areas:
- Ferrous Metallurgy: Deepen understanding of wrought steels and ferrous castings through hands-on assignments in foundries, supply base travel, or lab settings.
- Failure Analysis: Develop skills in metallography, fractography, and microscopy to address customer issues under the guidance of experts.
- Quality Engineering: Learn to apply materials engineering inspection methods and problem-solving techniques within a factory environment.
- Heat Treat Engineering: Gain hands-on experience with production operations, including recipe development, quality control, efficiency improvements, and capital projects.
- Product Development: Provide materials engineering support to design engineers developing next-generation products.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time student in a 4-year university pursuing an ABET-accredited degree in Materials Engineering (or Mechanical Engineering with a Materials Engineering minor).
- Completion of at least 24 semester hours at your current institution before the start of the internship.
- A minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative grade point average at the time of application and maintenance of this GPA prior to the start of the internship.
- Ability to relocate to the Peoria, IL area or the indicated work location for the duration of the internship.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate within a diverse team environment.

- Location: Mossville, Illinois (with potential for other U.S. locations).
- Term: Summer 2026.
- Modality: On-site (five days per week).
- Compensation: Paid position.
