The School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a part-time Digital Fabrication Intern to support the Sculpture, Installation, and Site (SIS) area. This role focuses on the management of the Physical Computing Lab, PC + 3D Printing Lab, Soft Sculpture Lab, and CNC Router and Laser Cutter Labs. This is a part-time position requiring 20 hours per week, totaling 300 hours per semester, with a preference for candidates available for both Fall and Spring semesters. This role is eligible for part-time benefits.
What you'll do#
- Work alongside SIS technicians to maintain and improve fabrication facilities.
- Provide supervision and administration of machines and tools in the labs.
- Assist with the management of student monitors in Doherty Hall.
- Support students, faculty, and staff in the safe use of equipment, ensuring compliance with safety guidelines.
- Manage equipment lending and assist with internal shop improvement projects.
- Report supply needs to SIS technicians.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor's degree (BFA or BXA).
- Experience with digital fabrication, physical computing, 3D printing, and sewing.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate and share knowledge effectively.
- Ability to meet quality and time requirements for assigned tasks.
- Preferred: Computing knowledge in Rhino, RhinoCAM, Adobe Illustrator, Processing, or Arduino.
- Must pass a successful background check.
