About the role#
Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises is seeking part-time Student Research Assistants to join the Simulation and Modeling Grant team. Under the supervision of Dr. Behnam Bahr, this team of graduate and undergraduate researchers focuses on creating safe and capable Level 5 autonomous vehicles. This position allows students to contribute to research that may count toward a Senior Project or Master’s Thesis with advisor approval.
What you'll do#
- Develop tools and systems for electric vehicles.
- Simulate Ackermann-style vehicles in virtual environments like Gazebo.
- Process image and point cloud data from Radar, Lidar, and thermal sensors.
- Research modular, end-to-end, and hybrid architectures.
- Implement path planning algorithms and program sensor fusion or machine learning models.
- Design automated repair and replacement systems for vehicle parts.
- Develop and test real-time teleoperation of vehicles.
- Work in the lab 8 hours per week, plus 2 hours for group meetings, seminars, and workshops.
- Document work, submit papers to conferences, and present progress to the team.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in required program courses for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.
- Status as a full-time student or graduation within one year.
- A visit to the Ganpat and Manju Center (9-101) and a meeting with current students before applying.
- Proficiency in at least one specialty area, such as mechanical design, software development, robotics, or marketing and art.
- Technical skills including C++, Python, ROS2, embedded systems (Arduino, Jetson Orin, etc.), or CAD/FEA software.
- Ability to reference electrical datasheets and analyze board schematics.
- Experience with sensor integration (I2C, SPI, CAN, UART) or robotic system automation.
- For marketing roles, a portfolio of work is required.
