About the role#
This research internship focuses on building foundation models for wireless sensing and perception. You will explore how self-supervised and multimodal learning can create generalizable representations of human activity and environments using radio-frequency (RF) signals. The goal is to develop models that learn from diverse wireless data and transfer across different users, devices, and settings.
What you'll do#
- Create new foundation-model architectures and representation-learning methods for RF signals and channel measurements.
- Investigate self-supervised, contrastive, generative, and multimodal learning approaches for large-scale wireless data.
- Study how models generalize across environments, users, and downstream perception tasks.
- Develop and test methods for fine-tuning, few-shot learning, and zero-shot transfer.
- Run experimental evaluations and build a proof-of-concept demonstration.
- Summarize your research for a potential publication or patent application.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a PhD program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
- Strong background in machine learning, deep learning, or representation learning.
- At least 2 years of programming experience in Python and proficiency with PyTorch.
- Experience with wireless sensing or RF signal data, including channel measurements or time-series signals.
- Knowledge of modern deep-learning architectures and training techniques.
- Ability to independently design, implement, and evaluate research ideas.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience in areas such as self-supervised learning, transformers, contrastive learning, generative models, or multimodal learning.
- Familiarity with RF data pipelines, signal preprocessing, or feature extraction.
- Experience with large-scale model training, distributed training, or GPU-based experimentation.
- A strong publication record in machine learning, sensing, mobile computing, or robotics.
Location & details#
- Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Employment Type: Full-time intern.
- Term: Rolling.
- Note: This position is paid. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available.
