About the role#

The Lariat Opinion Editor oversees all content within the daily editorial section, aiming to generate robust dialogue through editorials, staff and guest columns, and letters to the editor. This role chairs the editorial board and ensures the section reflects a wide variety of viewpoints.

What you'll do#

• Design and manage content for the opinion page.
• Chair weekly editorial board meetings.
• Write weekly editorials and occasional columns.
• Edit staff and reporter submissions for content, grammar, and Associated Press style.
• Monitor email accounts to manage and select letters to the editor for publication.
• Solicit reader feedback via online polls, surveys, and social media.
• Oversee the Lariat cartoonist and push opinion content to the web.
• Enforce departmental goals and deadlines.

What you'll need#

• Ability to manage content and incorporate diverse viewpoints.
• Strong editorial judgment and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in Associated Press style.
• Academic background in fields such as Communications, Journalism, Political Science, Marketing, English, Media Studies, Graphic Design, or Business Administration.

Location & details#

• Location: Castellaw Communications Center, Waco, Texas.
• Schedule: 20 hours per week.
• Term: Fall 2026.
• Compensation: $9.00 per hour plus a $4,000 scholarship per semester.
