About the role#
The News Editor directs daily news coverage and oversees the assistant news editor, staff writers, and lab reporters. This role requires close collaboration with the digital managing editor and photo editor to coordinate content for both online and print platforms. The position involves a commitment of 20 hours per week and includes a $4,500 scholarship.
What you'll do#
- Direct daily news coverage and manage long-term projects.
- Assign stories, photos, and multimedia content.
- Edit reporter stories for content, grammar, and Associated Press style.
- Coach writers on news writing, beat coverage, and story idea generation.
- Conduct one-on-one meetings with reporters and staff writers.
- Monitor the Lariat email account and wire services to assign localized stories.
- Enforce editorial goals and deadlines.
- Provide marketing and communications support for the department.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in Journalism, Communications, or English programs.
- Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to coach writers and provide constructive feedback.
- Willingness to take initiative and work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to comply with all University policies.
- Commitment to regular and punctual attendance.

- Location: Castellaw Communications Center, Waco, Texas.

- Compensation: $9.00 per hour plus a $4,500 scholarship.
