About the role#
As a firmware engineering intern, you will contribute to the low-level software running on our batteries and inverters. You will work on the layer where software meets hardware, making millisecond-level decisions that keep the fleet stable and balance the grid. You will ship code that affects real power flows and hardware in homes.
What you'll do#
- Design, implement, and test firmware in C/C++ on bare-metal, RTOS, and embedded Linux systems.
- Develop and debug device drivers, communication interfaces, and low-level system behavior.
- Read schematics, interpret datasheets, and learn how software interacts with circuits, sensors, and power electronics.
- Help build fleet-critical systems, including high-rate telemetry, automated fault detection and response, and grid-balancing control loops.
- Write reliable, deterministic, and safe code.
- Collaborate with hardware, power electronics, and platform software engineers to solve integration problems.
What you'll need#
- Solid understanding of C/C++, embedded systems concepts, and basic computer architecture.
- Experience from coursework, side projects, or prior internships involving microcontrollers, RTOS, sensor integration, robotics, or power electronics.
- Interest in how real systems behave, including timing diagrams, interrupts, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debugging actual hardware.
- Clear, concise communication skills.
- A builder's mindset, meaning you are curious, self-directed, and drawn to technical problems.
Location & details#
- Location: Austin, Texas.
- This is an on-site, full-time, paid internship.
- The role has a rolling start date.
- We are currently seeking students pursuing degrees in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
