About the role#
Barr is seeking a structural engineering intern for our Minneapolis team for the summer of 2027. You will support our structural engineering group on technical assignments related to hydropower facilities, wind turbine foundations, and industrial sites. This role includes contributing to structural design and analysis, preparing plans and specifications, and assisting with cost estimates. You will also participate in construction inspection and observation, which may involve short-term travel.
What you'll do#
- Apply foundational engineering principles to assist with engineering calculations and modeling for industrial and energy-related structures.
- Prepare engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation.
- Contribute to project reports and help develop cost estimates for engineering solutions.
- Participate in site visits and inspections to observe construction activities and ensure compliance with design intent.
- Use word processing, spreadsheet, and structural engineering software to support project tasks and team collaboration.
- Work closely with engineers and project managers in a professional consulting environment.
What you'll need#
- Civil engineering degree with at least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
- Junior or senior standing with a minimum of one full-time semester of coursework remaining after the internship.
- Minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Possession of a current, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
- Ability to work in locations with rough terrain, moving machinery, or outdoor conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks like standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching for extended periods.

- Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- Modality: Hybrid, with time split between the office and a home office.
- Travel: Up to 30% travel and fieldwork may be required.
- Compensation: The hourly range is $22.66 to $28.90, depending on experience and education.
