About the role#
AQR Capital Management is seeking a PhD Summer Associate to join the machine learning research team. This role focuses on proprietary strategies related to global stock selection, asset allocation, risk management, and trading. You will work alongside researchers, portfolio managers, and traders to develop and refine investment strategies. This is a hands-on position where you will manage all aspects of your research projects.
What you'll do#
- Perform statistical and economic research using financial data to build or improve machine learning investment strategies.
- Research implementation aspects of investment strategies, including risk models, trading cost models, portfolio construction, and optimization.
- Add features to the proprietary research system to implement new ideas.
- Participate in the design and development of research infrastructure for statistical and economic analysis.
What you'll need#
- PhD candidate status with an expected graduation in December 2027 or Spring 2028 in finance, economics, or a quantitative discipline like mathematics, computer science, statistics, or operations management.
- Coding experience in Python, R, C++, or MATLAB.
- Experience conducting empirical research, including cleaning, structuring, and analyzing large data sets.
- A strong background in statistics or econometrics and knowledge of optimization methods.
- Experience with high performance computing, cloud computing, and machine learning libraries such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- A strong understanding of machine learning concepts and their application to finance is preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in writing and verbally.
