About the role#
The Human Resources & Safety Co-Op works under HR leadership to support initiatives in a manufacturing facility. You will gain hands-on experience by assisting with recruiting, employee relations, labor relations, benefits, training systems, and safety compliance. This position involves working with both hourly and salaried employees alongside plant leadership.
What you'll do#
- Manage recruiting tasks including job postings, candidate screening, interview scheduling, and career fairs.
- Maintain employee records and HRIS data while preparing reports on workforce metrics like turnover and overtime.
- Support employee onboarding, orientation, benefits enrollment, and communication programs.
- Assist with labor relations, grievance tracking, and collective bargaining agreement administration.
- Administer the Learning Management System (LMS) and update training materials or work instructions.
- Conduct safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations including root cause analysis.
- Maintain OSHA records and support contractor safety programs.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s program for Human Resources, Business Administration, Occupational Safety, Organizational Leadership, or a related field.
- Availability to work 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours during the summer.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with professional confidentiality.
- Interest in HR, labor relations, safety, or manufacturing operations.
- Experience with spreadsheets and data analysis.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Hammond, Indiana.
- Work is on-site in a manufacturing environment.
- You must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Physical requirements include bending, squatting, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Occasional travel between facilities may be required.
