About the role#
The Damage Tolerance Intern joins the Non-Destructive Evaluation and Damage Tolerance Group at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. You will support analysis related to lifespan, fracture, fatigue, and damage tolerance for spaceflight and ground-based systems. This role provides exposure to the full range of damage tolerance assessments, including material test evaluation, FEA modeling, and stress analysis.
What you'll do#
- Solve problems using the fundamentals of fatigue and fracture mechanics.
- Use ASTM standards to evaluate data sets for material information.
- Create programs to assist with the evaluation of large data sets.
- Collect data on material properties to expand characterization efforts.
- Run analysis on crack cases to determine critical crack sizes and life expectancies.
- Facilitate the execution of project tasks by leveraging knowledge of structural material properties, compatibility, processing, and non-destructive evaluation.
- Develop and provide test data to space flight hardware design, problem resolution, and material usage review teams.
- Assist in planning laboratory test plan modifications and the design of new plans related to NDE evaluation.
- Use computers and software to generate reports, gather data, and communicate results.
- Interface with ESSCA engineers, technicians, and NASA customers.
- Work according to standard operating and safety procedures.
- Collaborate on a multi-disciplinary team.
What you'll need#
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace Engineering (or a related STEM field) from an ABET accredited institution.
- 0 to 5 years of experience.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Completion of coursework in foundations of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics and Mechanics of Materials.
- Experience with FEA modeling, MATLAB, Mathematica, and Solid Works.
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship.
- Valid Star ID or Real ID driver's license and access to an automobile.

- Modality: Hybrid (75% on-site at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, 25% home office).
- Employment Type: Full-time.
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
