About the role#
The Criminal Law Reform Project at the ACLU seeks a legal intern for the summer of 2027. This project advocates for the constitutional and civil rights of people impacted by criminal legal systems. We use litigation and advocacy to challenge government conduct that fuels the carceral state and police abuse. Our goal is to shift power to under-resourced communities and protect fundamental rights. This is a full-time, hybrid position based in our New York or Washington, DC office.
What you'll do#
You will work alongside our team to advance litigation and advocacy efforts. Your responsibilities include:
- Conducting legal research.
- Writing memos and drafting portions of court submissions.
- Performing fact investigations.
- Assisting in preparation for court cases, including depositions, oral arguments, hearings, and trials.
What you'll need#
This internship is open to students currently enrolled at a U.S. law school who have completed at least one year of law school before the program starts. You must be based in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.

- Research and communication skills.
- Attention to detail and organization.
- Ability to manage time effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Initiative to see projects through to completion.
- A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and racial justice.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, 35-hour-per-week internship for 10 consecutive weeks.
- The role is hybrid, based in either New York, NY, or Washington, DC.
- Start dates are May 24 or June 7.
- This position is paid at a rate of $24 per hour.
