About the role#
We are looking for a creative and collaborative intern to work directly with our forecasters and the Writing Committee. This role focuses on elevating the detail, clarity, and precision of the language used in our forecasts. You will help translate complex meteorological concepts into clear, engaging content for our users. This position is ideal for someone who wants to bridge the gap between technical expertise and consumer-facing communication.
What you'll do#
- Work side-by-side with forecasters to craft accurate, detailed, and consumer-focused descriptions of weather patterns and events.
- Identify useful details, nuances, and sensory descriptions to improve forecast language.
- Translate complex meteorological concepts into clearer, more accessible language for a broad audience.
- Develop new vocabulary, descriptive frameworks, and consistent terminology for recurring weather patterns.
- Embed with the forecasting team to understand how forecasts are created and where language choices add the most value.
- Collaborate with the Writing Committee to test, evaluate, and introduce new writing approaches.
- Gather feedback from meteorologists and other stakeholders to iterate on and improve forecast descriptions.
- Review forecast descriptions across our consumer platforms to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop and test language that helps users understand the intensity, duration, and real-world impact of weather events.
- Contribute to the development of forecast-writing standards, guidelines, and best practices.
- Study forecast language performance and recommend improvements based on clarity and usefulness.
What you'll need#
- A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Writing, or a closely related field.
- Current enrollment as a graduate student in communications, writing, journalism, English, creative writing, technical writing, or a related discipline.
- Exceptional command of written language, including tone, structure, and precision.
- A demonstrated ability to turn complex or technical information into clear, engaging content.
- Strong collaborative skills and a genuine interest in working with subject-matter experts.
- Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to learn meteorological concepts and workflows.
- Ability to receive expert feedback, revise work quickly, and improve through an iterative process.
