About the role#
This internship with the Pharmaceutical Technology team focuses on late-stage formulation development for solid oral dosage forms. You will work alongside formulation scientists and analytical chemists to investigate excipient compatibility and chemical stability. The role involves characterizing interactions between excipients and drug substances to define strategies for high-quality product formulations. You will summarize your experimental results and present findings to the project team and department leadership.
What you'll do#
- Investigate the mechanism of excipient degradation in the presence of pH modifiers using techniques like HPLC, titration, and colorimetrical methods.
- Collaborate on LC/MS analysis to identify and characterize leachable degradants that affect drug substance stability.
- Evaluate degradation kinetics across varying temperature and relative humidity conditions.
- Assess potential mitigation strategies involving formulation and process variables.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a PhD program for Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- Enrollment in university for at least one semester following the internship.
- Expected graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028.
- Hands-on experience with analytical chemistry, such as HPLC, LC/MS, or UV/Vis spectroscopy.
- Familiarity with solid oral dosage form development and relevant coursework in pharmaceutics or physical chemistry.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to laboratory safety practices.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a laboratory setting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Location & details#
- Location: North Chicago, Illinois, United States.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
