About the role#
This Co-Op role sits within the Cell Culture Development and Automation team. You will work at the intersection of optical spectroscopy, cell culture science, laboratory robotics, and data analytics. This position focuses on integrating spectroscopy with automated liquid-handling robotics to enable rapid, at-line characterization of cell-culture product quality and metabolites. You will build hardware, develop automated analytical workflows, and apply data-science modeling to production-relevant datasets.
What you'll do#
- Integrate spectroscopy systems with an automated liquid-handling platform for high-throughput spectral acquisition.
- Design and 3D print custom labware and sampling components.
- Develop and troubleshoot automated liquid-handler methods for sample acquisition, flow-cell delivery, and cleaning cycles.
- Perform aseptic cell culture techniques, including thawing, passaging, and banking of mammalian (CHO) cell lines.
- Collect, process, and analyze Raman spectral and process data.
- Apply chemometric and data-science techniques to build predictive models for metabolites and product quality attributes.
- Collaborate with scientists in cell culture development, automation engineering, and analytical development.
- Document experimental methods and results, contributing to a final presentation or manuscript-quality summary.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Expected graduation date between May 2028 and December 2028.
- Proficiency in aseptic techniques, such as thawing, passaging, and banking mammalian cell lines in a biosafety cabinet.
- Knowledge of optical spectroscopy techniques, including Raman, fluorescence, and absorbance.
- Understanding of biology, biochemistry, cell metabolism, and protein characterization as applied to CHO cell culture development.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex laboratory robotics and instrumentation challenges.
- Experience designing and creating custom labware using 3D printing.
- Working knowledge of programming or scripting languages like Python, Visual Basic, or C/C++.
Location & details#
- Location: Worcester, Massachusetts.
- Term: 6-month program (Summer 2027 through Fall 2027).
- Work Modality: On-site.
