About the role#
York Space Systems is looking for a hands-on Software Engineering Intern to build software that interacts with real spacecraft hardware. You will work alongside Flight Software and Spacecraft Integration & Test engineers to develop, debug, and test systems that command, monitor, and validate space vehicles. This role involves working with embedded Linux systems, spacecraft interfaces, automated test infrastructure, and hardware-in-the-loop environments. You will gain exposure to the full engineering loop by writing code, running it against hardware, and troubleshooting complex system failures.
What you'll do#
- Develop and test software for spacecraft flight, vehicle integration, and automated testing.
- Write Python, C, C++, or Bash code to interact with embedded systems and spacecraft hardware.
- Build tools that command, monitor, configure, and validate spacecraft subsystems.
- Participate in Software-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop development and testing.
- Connect software to real hardware interfaces, networks, telemetry streams, and simulators.
- Troubleshoot and debug issues across software, operating systems, networks, and hardware using logs, command-line tools, and test equipment.
- Create automated tests to exercise spacecraft functionality and verify expected behavior.
- Support the test-like-you-fly philosophy by helping align test environments with the actual vehicle.
- Execute unit and integration tests while participating in technical design discussions and code reviews.
- Collaborate with systems, software, electrical, and test engineers to turn requirements into working solutions.
- Use Git, GitLab, CI/CD, and modern software development workflows.
- Document and communicate technical progress, failures, and learnings.
What you'll need#
- Experience developing software for embedded systems and C or C++ on Linux.
- Familiarity with microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone, robotics, drones, or automotive systems.
- Experience debugging software that communicates with physical devices.
- Knowledge of interfaces such as serial, Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP, CAN, SPI, or I2C.
- Understanding of multithreading, inter-process communication, or pub/sub messaging.
- Experience with Software-in-the-Loop or Hardware-in-the-Loop testing and automated system-level testing.
- Familiarity with telemetry, command-and-control systems, or distributed systems.
- Experience with GitLab CI/CD, CMake, and Docker or containerized environments.
- Proficiency with debuggers, packet captures, logic analyzers, or oscilloscopes.
- Experience with spacecraft, aerospace, or other mission-critical systems.
- Personal projects involving hardware that moves, senses, or communicates.
- Proficiency in Python or scripting languages.
- Experience working in lab or system integration environments.
- Active Secret Clearance.
- A passion for space.
