The Support Coordinator acts as a team lead for the YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange (SWSE) program. This national initiative helps 16 and 17-year-old Canadians spend six weeks in another province, where they live with host families, gain paid work experience, and practice their second official language. You will oversee regional operations, guide local teams, and ensure participants have a safe and successful experience.

    What you'll do#

    • Promote the program within local communities and assist in selecting youth participants, host families, and employment partners.
    • Help Local Coordinators plan and deliver activities while managing program budgets.
    • Act as a bridge between the Regional Coordinator and Local Coordinators to monitor compliance with program objectives.
    • Build relationships with youth, host families, employers, and community partners.
    • Visit program sites and respond to conflicts or emergencies as they arise.
    • Facilitate participant travel between provinces and provide logistical support at departure points.
    • Write a comprehensive report summarizing program results at the end of the summer.
    • Handle administrative tasks including case noting, incident reporting, expense tracking, and file documentation.
    • Assume the duties of a Local Coordinator when required.

    What you'll need#

    • Current full-time enrollment in a post-secondary program or equivalent experience.
    • At least one year of experience working with youth in a community program setting.
    • Experience in a professional or student leadership role.
    • Proven ability in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and building interpersonal relationships.
    • Strong administrative skills, specifically in budget management and spreadsheet tracking.
    • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
    • Valid driver’s license, access to an insured vehicle, and willingness to provide a driver’s abstract.
    • Reliable internet access for the duration of the contract.
    • Prior training in mental health support or suicide intervention is preferred.
    • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive practices.
    • Valid Emergency First Aid/CPR certification required before the exchange begins.

    Location & details#

    • This is a remote, full-time hourly contract running from January to August.
    • Positions are available across Canada, but you must live within your assigned region.
    • You must be available for three mandatory, paid in-person training sessions in January, March, and April/May.
    • The role requires flexible hours, including days, evenings, and weekends, and the ability to travel within Canada.
    • You must be available to work full-time hours during the first week of June and on specific travel days in late June and August.
