About the role#
This position is part of the YMCA High School Co-Op Program. You will assist in providing childcare at after-school or preschool sites. Under the supervision of experienced staff, you will help create a safe environment for children while gaining hands-on experience in youth programming and workplace skills. This role supports youth development and promotes YMCA values like honesty, respect, and responsibility.
What you'll do#
- Support curriculum within established guidelines for participants.
- Help distribute snacks during designated times.
- Assist children with homework and quiet study activities.
- Facilitate formal and informal play both indoors and outdoors.
- Supervise children under the guidance of a qualified Site Lead.
- Assist staff with setting up, breaking down activity centers, and cleaning program areas.
- Maintain positive relationships with children, parents, and school personnel.
- Attend family nights, program activities, staff meetings, and trainings.
What you'll need#
- You are at least 17 years of age.
- You are a currently enrolled high school student in a recognized co-op or career readiness program.
- You hold or are able to obtain CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications, as well as Child Abuse prevention training.
- You have the ability to plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate activities.
- Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting is preferred.
- You can lift or move up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally.

- This is an on-site, part-time position based in Houston, Texas.
