About the role#
x.ai is looking for students to join our engineering team for the Winter 2027 term. You will work alongside mentors and other engineers to apply your academic background to real-world projects. This role involves direct contributions to our mission of building AI systems that understand the universe. We operate with a flat structure where initiative and hands-on work are expected.
What you'll do#
- Apply academic knowledge to practical engineering projects.
- Collaborate with a mentor and team members.
- Contribute directly to our core AI mission.
- Participate in software engineering work that has a significant impact.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a bachelor's or graduate degree program in Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
- At least 3 months of software programming or development experience.
- Coding experience in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- A GPA of 3.5 or above.
- At least 6 months of experience developing and deploying software for real-world applications.
- Fundamental knowledge of computer architecture and networks.
- Experience with software documentation, creating system diagrams, and defining software requirements.
- Skills in debugging, performance optimization, and unit testing.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team.

- This is a full-time, on-site position located in Palo Alto, California.
- The internship term is for Winter 2027.
- This is a paid position.
