About the role#
This externship program provides an immersive, hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work directly with our team to explore the realities of life in an ER. This is an unpaid opportunity designed to help students build a foundation of clinical skills and determine if emergency medicine is the right path for their career.
What you'll do#
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals.
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist with guidance from your mentor.
- Experience the teamwork and pace that defines emergency care at VEG.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for long periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment that may include strong or unpleasant odors.
