About the role#
This externship program provides an immersive, hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to gain real-world exposure to emergency care, ask questions, and explore whether a career in this field is the right path for you. This is an unpaid opportunity designed for students currently enrolled in veterinary technology or nursing programs.
What you'll do#
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals through real-time mentoring and on-the-floor training.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist under professional guidance.
- Experience the teamwork and pace that defines emergency veterinary care.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, work on the floor, lift up to 25 kg independently, and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
