About the role#
This externship program provides hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain real-world skills and insight into the daily operations of an emergency hospital. This program is designed for students to explore emergency medicine and complete required clinical hours.
What you'll do#
- Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist under guidance.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care.
- Explore the field of emergency medicine to see if it fits your career goals.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, kneel, work on the floor, lift up to 25 kg independently, and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
