About the role#
This externship program provides hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work directly with credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the daily realities of an emergency hospital. This role is designed for students who want to explore emergency care and build a foundation for their future careers.
What you'll do#
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and pace that defines emergency veterinary care.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- You must be a student, not a future veterinarian or veterinary assistant.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- A current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for long periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work well in a busy environment.
