About the role#
Our Veterinary Technician Student Externship Program provides a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. You will work directly alongside our credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to gain real-world experience in an emergency hospital setting. This program is designed for students to build a foundation, practice skills, and explore the reality of emergency veterinary care.
What you'll do#
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals.
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and environment of emergency care.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for long periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong odors.
