About the role#
Our Veterinary Technician Student Externship offers a hands-on experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the daily realities of an emergency hospital. This program helps you build a foundation in emergency care and determine if this field is the right career path for you.
What you'll do#
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for direct mentoring.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals while experiencing the teamwork and pace of our hospital.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- You must be enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to begin the program within six months of your application.
- Proof of current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for long periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Physical capacity to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in an environment that may be noisy or have strong odors.
- You are empathetic, curious, humble, and take ownership of your work.
