About the role#
This externship program provides veterinary technology and nursing students with hands-on experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the reality of emergency care, build your clinical foundation, and determine if this career path is right for you. This is an unpaid, on-site externship.
What you'll do#
- Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and daily operations of an emergency hospital.
- Explore a career in veterinary emergency medicine.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for long periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work in a busy environment.
- Empathetic and people-centric approach.
- Sense of humility and ownership over your work.
- Curious nature.
- Note: This program is for veterinary technician or nursing students only, not for future veterinarians or veterinary assistants.
