About the role#

The Veterinary Technician Student Externship at VEG ER for Pets provides an immersive, hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. Students work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain real-world exposure to emergency care, patient triage, and diagnostics. This program is designed to help students build a strong professional foundation and determine if a career in emergency veterinary medicine is the right path for them.

What you'll do#

• Learn from emergency veterinary professionals through real-time mentoring and on-the-floor training.
• Assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
• Practice specific clinical skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist under professional guidance.
• Experience the teamwork and pace of an emergency hospital environment.
• Explore the daily responsibilities and challenges of working in emergency veterinary medicine.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
• Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or completion of specific skills.
• Proof of a current rabies vaccination or titer.
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
• Capability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
• Willingness to work in a noisy environment that may involve strong or unpleasant odors.
