About the role#
This externship program offers hands-on experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the daily realities of an emergency hospital. This role is designed for students to explore the field and build a foundation for their future careers.
What you'll do#
- Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and pace that defines emergency care.
- Explore the emergency medicine field to see if it is the right path for your career.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Proof of a current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work well with people from all backgrounds.
