About the role#
The Veterinary Technician Student Externship at VEG provides a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. This program is designed to help students build a strong foundation in emergency care while working alongside credentialed veterinary technicians. This is an unpaid externship opportunity.
What you'll do#
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals through real-time mentoring and on-the-floor training.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school's proficiency checklist under professional guidance.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of an emergency veterinary environment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program (or a program actively seeking accreditation).
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
