About the role#
The Veterinary Technician Student Externship at VEG ER for Pets provides an immersive, hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. Students work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain real-time mentorship and exposure to the daily operations of an emergency hospital. This program is designed to help students build a foundation in emergency care while exploring the realities of the field.
What you'll do#
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school's proficiency checklist under guidance.
- Experience the teamwork and pace that defines emergency veterinary care.
- Learn from experienced emergency veterinary professionals.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Proof of current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
