About the role#
This externship provides a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to gain real-world exposure to the field. This program is designed to help you build a foundation in emergency care and determine if this career path is right for you.
What you'll do#
- Pair up with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, and diagnostics.
- Support the team with anesthesia and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and daily operations of an emergency hospital.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
