About the role#
This externship program offers a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to gain real-world experience. This program is designed for students to explore life in an emergency hospital, ask questions, and try new techniques. Please note this is an unpaid externship.
What you'll do#
- Pair up with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice skills required by your school's proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and pace that defines emergency care.
- Explore whether emergency medicine is the right career path for you.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work well with people from all backgrounds and different personality types.
- Empathetic, humble, curious, and possess a sense of ownership over your work.
