About the role#
This externship program offers hands-on experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to learn about the day-to-day operations of an emergency hospital. This program is designed for students to gain exposure to the field and decide if emergency medicine is the right career path for them.
What you'll do#
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist with guidance from your mentor.
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals.
- Explore the environment of an emergency veterinary hospital.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation. This program is for students only, not for future veterinarians or veterinary assistants.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
