About the role#
This externship program provides hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain real-world exposure to the emergency room environment. This is an unpaid, on-site opportunity designed for students currently enrolled in veterinary nursing or technology programs.
What you'll do#
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist under professional guidance.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care.
- Explore your interest in a career in emergency medicine.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Proof of current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for long periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment that may involve strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds and personality types.
