About the role#
This externship program provides hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the realities of an emergency hospital. This role is designed for students who want to build a foundation in emergency care and explore the field through active participation.
What you'll do#
- Pair up with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work well in a busy environment.
