About the role#
This externship program provides a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to gain real-world exposure to the field. This role is designed to help you build a professional foundation and determine if emergency veterinary medicine is the right career path for you.
What you'll do#
- Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice skills required by your school proficiency checklist with guidance from your mentor.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care at VEG.
- Explore the daily responsibilities of an emergency veterinary technician.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work well with people from all backgrounds and personality types.
