About the role#
This externship program provides hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. You will work directly with credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the reality of ER care. This is an unpaid opportunity designed for students to build a foundation, practice skills, and explore a career in emergency veterinary medicine.
What you'll do#
- Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work well with people from all backgrounds and personality types.
